In the Mood for Love: An Exhibition Featuring Chinese and Canadian Female Artists

DECEMBER 12, 2017 - JANUARY 31, 2018

The Poly Culture Art Center and Beijing’s Gauguin Gallery co-present a group exhibition bringing together modern and contemporary artworks by 27 female artists from China and Canada. On view from December 12, 2017, to January 31, 2018, this exhibition features 67 dynamic works, including traditional Chinese paintings, oil paintings, prints, sculptures, photography, along with jewelry and fashion design.

Celebrated Chinese painter Cai Jin, conceptual artist Cui Xiuwen and a selection of influential Chinese artists were introduced to Canadian audiences for the first time. Artists represented include Canadians Emily Carr, Rita Letendre, and Marianna Gartner.

“In the Mood for Love” brings a variety of artworks and approaches by some of the best female artists from both Canada and China. It is the first time that many of these established female Chinese artists’ works have been seen in Canada.” says curator Ms. Dong Huiping.  “We are thrilled to present their works together on this special occasion. We hope to offer Vancouver audiences a multi-faceted view of these artistic visions from Canada and China.”

Visitors can view a variety of artistic approaches by Canadian and Chinese female artists under one roof. While many contemporary Chinese artists in the 20th century have experienced heavy influence from the Western European art history, female artists in China tend to express themselves in styles that are more unique to their upbringing and environment.

“It is my responsibility and passion to create more opportunities for cultural exchange between Canada and China.” says Amelia Gao, founder of Seven Hundred Honour Foundation that provides support for the exhibition.” The artists represented come from different cultural backgrounds and use different artistic languages, and they are all notable figures in their respective fields of art.”

“This art exhibition is our tribute to Canada’s 150 finale celebration during this holiday season,” says Poly Culture North America’s CEO, Ms. Chen Yi. “We hope this exhibition can serve as a catalyst to spark new dialogues between artists and audiences from these two countries, and contribute to enriching the local arts and cultural scene”.

This exhibition is co-presented by Poly Culture North America and Beijing Gauguin Culture Media, with support from the Seven Hundred Honour Foundation. It is curated by Ms. Dong Huiping, Associate Professor from the China Tianjin Polytechnic University and Static Images Director of CAFA Art Museum.
